Possible risks of conceiving after age 35

In today’s society more and more woman are opting for late marriages and having children later in their life. This is mainly due to the focusing on the career development and a desire to build a financial security before hand. Also, the advancement in the medical care and fertility treatment has made woman more confident in dealing with their pregnancy. While planning to delay the pregnancy, woman should also be aware of the possible risks that may follow.

Health problems in mother- Woman who conceive after 35 years are more prone to develop high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, placental abruption, placenta previa, preeclampsia and still births. Careful examination for these conditions should be taken before and during the pregnancy period to avoid any risks.

Drastic drop of fertility level - With the going years, the quantity and quality of eggs decreases. Fertility rates begin to decline gradually at age 30, more so at 35, and markedly at age 40. Most of the women above 45 years require fertility treatment to get pregnant. Also, staying pregnant becomes a serious problem.

Miscarriage- The chances for miscarriage increases with age. Studies show that the rate of miscarriage increases up to 25% when woman reaches 40 years of age. The main reason behind this is the abnormalities in chromosomes that occur with increasing age.

Caesarean birth- This is slightly more common among women having their first child after 35 years.

Down’s syndrome- In older women, abnormal division of the egg leading to unequal chromosomes at the end of division results in conceiving a child with Down’s syndrome. The risk of having a baby with Down syndrome rises from about 1 in 759 at age 30 to 1 in 302 at age 35, 1 in 82 at age 40.

Other issues- As the age of having children increases, the associated difficulties should also be addressed. It becomes difficult for an older parent to relate with his teen age child or other younger parents. Older parents are more prone to illnesses and even death, when their child may still be a teenager or adolescent. In such cases, the future of the child becomes a big problem.

Preparing to have a healthy baby

Even though there are several risks associated with late pregnancies and child birth, there are many women who overcome these risks and give birth to healthy babies. For this, great amount of preparation is required.

Getting a pre conception check up- It is important to visit your doctor and discuss possible health care plans for your unique needs. Determining the possible risks through various screening tests will help to take the appropriate measures. Pregnant woman can seek the help of a doctor who specializes in high-risk pregnancies.

Having a healthy diet

Folic acid -The current recommendation for pregnant women is to take a daily supplement containing at least 0.4 mg. of folic acid along with the consumption of foods naturally rich in folic acid. Folic acid is naturally contained in leafy green vegetables, dried beans, liver and some citrus fruits.

Limit caffeine intake and do not drink and smoke. Before taking any medications, get the consent of your doctor.

Well balanced diet- Eat a variety of foods so that you get all the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Eat and drink at least 4 servings of dairy products and calcium-rich foods a day. Have food rich in fiber. Choose at least one source each of Vitamin C, Vitamin A and folic acid every day.

Exercise regularly- Consult your doctor for the seeking advice on the exercise regime that can be followed while pregnant. Maintain a moderate level physical activity.

Even though taking care of the child becomes tiring as age progresses, the financial stability that most women might have achieved by that time makes it affordable to get help with house hold chores and caring of the babies. Also, pregnancy can be a risk at any age and there are several moms leading happy lives with their babies, regardless of their age.

I was not thinking about the effect of late pregnancy to the baby. I am 29 now and still think there is a lot of time, but after reading your article I started to think, maybe I should start considering having a baby now before it's too late.
