" Happy father’s day"

When I greeted my dad “Happy father’s day” he gave a quizzical look. I have heard of parents’ day, teacher’s day and children’s day. What is this father’s day about? I was stumped by his naivety. I knew he was Gen X (old generation) but not to this extent I thought,. As if to break the silence he thundered, it has always been you mother’s day and say thought and guffawed. Not appreciating this wry humor, I gave him a grin.

Listen, dad 3rd Sunday of June is father’s day. After all, you work through out the year, take up the responsibility of running the family and you have been the ATM (anytime money) for us. Father’s day is a thanks-giving sorts, for you. We greet you and treat you. Of course with your money, I said.

I Love My Dad

My brother and mom endorsed my statement in unison. Greeting is ok, but why that… treat, he dragged along. It is here my mom took over. The affectionate children are showing unconditional love. Don’t be mean. We will go to the Restaurant this evening she concluded without waiting for my dad’s concurrence, as usual. Daddy had little choice but to give a hesitant nod. Ok, but keep it simple! At the restaurant, he ordered vegetarian meal, while we were gorging on chaats and ice creams and ran up a huge bill.

On the way back, I asked have you celebrated your birthday? He said he remembered only one day and that was Feb 14th. We were shocked to hear that. This Gen X remembers Feb 14th! Valentine’s Day! How come? It happens to be his wedding day; that day he lost his bachelorhood and mom gained her master’s!
